BEAR HUNTING

The black bear, "ghost of the Maine woods", is one of the most elusive big game animals we have in Maine. Hunters will spend a lifetime in the field, only to see two to three bears in their natural habitat. Backcountry Outfitters leases pristine land in prime bear country and by the use of bait, increases your chances exponentially in harvesting one of these elusive animals. All sites are well within shooting range (17-22 yards), giving you the opportunity to make a good shot (rifle, muzzleloader, bow, crossbow, or handgun).  All sites are labeled with their exact distance and have specific measurements at the bait to provide the hunter a better way to judge the size of the animal before taking the shot. Backcountry Outfitters does not allow the shooting of a sow with cubs and hunting over bait gives the hunter a little extra time to evaluate the situation, making sure there are no cubs present before taking a shot. Tree stand hunting is the preferred method and will elevate you high enough to help eliminate your chances of getting "picked" by the bear (also helps with scent control). Maine's moose population is estimated between 60,000-70,000 animals. Each year approximately 50,000 eager hunters apply for a moose hunting permit, with only 2,000 to 3,000 recipients that are fortunate enough to be drawn. If you are one of those lucky recipient‘s, Backcountry Outfitters is here to provide you with an experience that will last a lifetime. Our guide has years of experience and with a little luck, get you within shooting distance of one of these magnificent animals. Until you have experienced the adrenalin rush of hearing the response (with good calling) from a mature bull moose, either grunting back at you or thrashing the trees with his massive antlers, it is hard to describe. During the hunt, Backcountry Outfitters can provide the lodging and transportation for the permittee and the sub-permittee (the cabin can accomodate 5 adults comfortably (7 if you wish to share a bed). Other lodging fees apply to anyone beyond the permittee and sub-permittee. Once the animal is down, we will field dress, extricate (with assistance), and transport the moose to a game inspection station (if needed). 

The Maine whitetail deer is one of the State's most sought after big game animals. A mature buck can exceed a field dressed weight of over 200 pounds, which qualifies you for the Maine Big Buck Club. When snow comes, tracking and still hunting (stalking) are the preferred methods. Stand hunting is also a great way to harvest a Maine deer. Backcountry Outfitters provides a semi-guided hunt for whitetails. We will provided transportation to the hunting area, then assist in animal recovery, field dressing, and extrication from the field. Usually mid November is the peak of the rut, this is when you will find the bucks on the heels of the does, like the buck illustrated in the photo ("I saw the doe come out into the twitch trail, I then heard the buck grunting in the woods behind her. The next thing I saw was the bucks antlers as he came up over the knoll into the twitch trail the doe was standing on. I took my shot").
